Brandon’s Progress (off the shelf)

I’m reading a retelling of John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress in preparation for the play I’m putting on with our youth group. It’s going to be a lot of work, but our mid-January production should be a blast! I just read a section where Christian has made it through the Shining Gate, and is on his way up the mountain to the Celestial City. He meets a couple of characters who are running AWAY from the city, Timorous and Mistrust. Apparently they had had enough of trusting the Owner – they had a close run-in with lions and other dangers. Christian tries to convince these two men to turn around back toward the City. Mistrust said, “Ahead there are lions and demons and all sorts of dangers. We are not the ones going the wrong way. . .If the lions had not been sleeping, we would have been torn to pieces.” Wow. Talk about overlooking a God-given provision! Mistrust assumed that the Owner had nothing to do with the sleeping lions, that it was coincidental that the felines were snoozing. How many times do I do the same thing? I believe that only when we get to heaven will we even begin to understand the constant protection, provision, and providence God has arranged for His children. Day by day, moment by moment, God is at work, all the time calling His creation to Himself. (Acts 17:26-27)
